Lions roll past Arizona; Red Wings spiral early; Dan Miller mourning in the background
Oct 12, 2026
Detroit Sports Nation leads with a somber note for Dan Miller before pivoting to the Lions’ first convincing win of the season against Arizona. The show also makes the case that the Red Wings already look lost, while the Lions’ bye week has the conversation shifting toward division and even Super Bowl upside.

I want to start off this video sending out prayers to Dan Miller along with the friends and family of the Miller family

I'm Dustin Fiocca with Detroit Sports Nation. Time for your daily rundown on this Monday
0:15
And let's start off talking about the somber news that broke yesterday
0:20
If you were listening to the Lions broadcast on the radio, you were missing out on a very familiar voice
0:26
That would be the voice of the Detroit Lions, Dan Miller. He was not on the call. It was Jason Benetti filling in
0:33
That is due to the unfortunate news that Dan Miller's wife passed away
0:38
And I can only imagine the difficulty Dan and the rest of his family are feeling in this time
0:45
I did get to know Dan Miller a little bit, working with him personally at the Detroit Lions Radio Network for a few years
0:52
And he is a class act individual. my personal opinion I do believe he is the most talented and best play-by-play voice I've ever
1:01
heard in the business and it doesn't matter what you do for a living I know we know Dan Miller
1:06
because he's in our lives and get to hear him on these call with our Lions game so we feel like we
1:11
know him but losing a spouse in any capacity is always a difficult difficult thing and I can only
1:17
imagine the kind of pain and grief he is going through along with the rest of that family so
1:22
if you are the praying kind i know the prayers directed towards that miller family are very much
1:28
appreciated but very sad situation for dan miller and company dan we certainly thinking of you do want to try and reset though and talk about some positivity with these Lions with what we saw on the field And what we saw on the field
1:43
yesterday out of these Lions was their first dominant win on the season. They blow out
1:48
they destroy the Arizona Cardinals 45-21. And this is exactly what you wanted to see out of
1:57
this Lions team. Yeah, the first quarter was ugly, but when you score on seven straight drives to
2:02
follow, I can forgive a bad first quarter. The Lions for the first time this year look dominant
2:07
and we can't play around. The Cardinals are a bad team, but that's exactly what you want to see a
2:13
team do to a bad team. Annihilate them. And after you start off slow in the first quarter, you shut
2:20
them down. The offense looked elite. I haven't been hard on the offense at all this year. I think
2:26
they've looked very good. I've been pleased. I've been satisfied with the offense, but yesterday's
2:32
performance, that is what you see when this Lions offense is clicking on all cylinders
2:37
And that was just three quarters of football. That first quarter was bad. Let's forgive it
2:42
They finished very strong the last three. But that is what you can see out of this Lions offense
2:47
when it's clicking right. And boy, were they clicking right yesterday. Great offensive
2:52
performance. And for the first time this season, it was a capable defensive performance. The
3:00
secondary giving up a touchdown on Arizona's first drive. After that, they shut down the Cardinals
3:06
And again Cardinals no good quarterback no good offense no good team But the Lions have played a lot of bad teams this year This is the first time they won convincingly This is the first time their defense looked competent And yes ultimately the Cardinals may have gotten a couple other touchdowns
3:24
They finished with 21, but 14 of those 21 points were in garbage time
3:29
I was very pleased and satisfied with the Lions' defensive performance. The secondary looked good
3:35
Another great game for Aleem McNeil. That was a positive sign because now we enter the bye week
3:41
Now we get to the nitty gritty of the season. Brian Branch, I'm expecting him back after the bye, and it is perfect timing
3:48
because Lions are right there with the Packers, with the Bears. They're with the rest of the NFC North with the exception of the Vikings
3:59
How are they 5-0? Make that make sense to me. It doesn't, but that's what we got
4:04
But the fact of the matter is, though, the Lions are very much in this race for the division
4:10
And now we're getting to the division matchups. First game after the bye is against the Packers
4:15
If this is the first game we get Brian Branch back for, it is the perfect time to have him back
4:21
But just looking at yesterday, it's exactly what you wanted to see
4:25
Great Lions offense and a capable Lions defense. If it's clicking like that from here on out, if we get help on the secondary
4:33
I'm back on the train that the Lions can actually be, wait for it, a Super Bowl threat
4:39
Now that's a team that we're talking about that's a championship threat. You know what kind of team is not a championship threat? Our hockey team
4:47
The Red Wings blow Is there a worse word than blow Because whatever you can use to define the Red Wings and the amount of suckage that they had this season let use that The offseason start to the season
5:01
they suck. Two straight losses, two straight games, lost on Friday to the Kraken
5:07
couldn't put up a goal on Saturday against Montreal. How does that sound? Does that pretty
5:14
much sum it up. I know I'm harsh on our teams. The Red Wings was one that I actually expected
5:20
to start off strong. Lots of negativity in the offseason. Lots of scrutiny with how poorly
5:27
they've been managed. How poorly they've handled all their situations. Thought they'd come out with
5:31
some spitfire. I actually predicted them to make the playoffs this year. Well, let's slap some
5:37
sense into me and say, boy, was I wrong. This team looks atrocious. As ugly as their offseason
5:43
Call me up for basketball season. I'm done with hockey season already
5:49
We just started. We're two weeks into October. Don't come at me and tell me that I'm overreacting
5:54
It's been years of ineptitude out of this hockey team, and we're picking up right where we left off last year
6:00
This Red Wings team is a joke. Those are my thoughts. Let me hear yours, guys
