Michigan turns to Tommy Carr, Michigan State still can't finish, and the Pistons open with a brutal test
Oct 19, 2026
Michigan gets a clear quarterback opinion after the Penn State win, with Tommy Carr treated as the better option over Bryce Underwood. Michigan State is improving but still can't close games, and the Pistons open the regular season against Boston with little margin for error.

Another weekend of college football is in the books, and I think it's safe to say we learned a lot about our teams
0:07
I'm Dustin Fiocco with Detroit Sports Nation. Time for your daily rundown on this Monday, and I want to start off talking about our Michigan Wolverines
0:17
They had a very big win on Saturday over Penn State. Let me tell you why it was a big win
0:22
It was a win led by Tommy Carr. The clamoring for the last few weeks after some rough showings to start the season, after
0:32
back-to-back losses, and after an absolutely brutal first half for Bryce Underwood, he
0:38
got the pull and in came Tommy Carr. And it's just plain as day
0:44
This team plays better. This team plays with confidence. This team plays to win for Tommy Carr
0:51
Now, I can't sit here in good faith and tell you on the fact that Tommy Carr is the future
0:57
but he is definitely the present. Tommy Carr is the quarterback you have got to run with
1:04
Now, I don't know if there are boosters in the background saying you got to play Bryce
1:09
Underwood but from a logistical standpoint when it comes to just winning football games if you a coach if you a team if you a university and your goal is to win a football game you absolutely can no longer start Bryce Underwood It has to be Inequivitably be Tommy Carr from here on out This team just plays better And you can speculate night and day as to why they play better under Tommy Carr
1:37
The run game looks better. Obviously, the passing game looks better. The offense as a whole looks better for Tommy Carr. Bryce Underwood, his defense gave up three points to Penn State. That wasn't good enough to come ahead over Penn State. He still led this offense to zero points at the half to trail those Nittany Lions 3-0 at halftime
2:02
This after losing to Iowa. This after losing to Minnesota. All of that has to lead to Bryce Underwood losing his job as starting quarterback
2:13
Tommy Carr earned it. He went in the second half and balled out
2:18
Tommy Carr is the man. And outside of booster reasons there is no logical football reason why Tommy Carr should not be our starting quarterback moving forward that your Michigan Wolverines do want to touch a little bit on Michigan State We learned something about them It plain as day two
2:38
They can't win. Not saying they aren't improving. They've looked better their last two games
2:44
Actually against Northwestern, I'd go as far as to say they looked pretty good. That was a ranked
2:48
team. And Michigan State, it was their game to lose, and they did just that. They lost it
2:54
They could not close it out. That's now two weeks in a row. MSU could not close out a game
3:01
Michigan State, with the eye test and what I'm seeing on a football level, they seem to be playing a lot better ball
3:06
but they have yet to find the formula to win a football game
3:10
Many people don't think they're going to win another game yet this season
3:14
given the way they've closed out the last couple of games. Hard to argue it
3:18
Eye test, though, I am liking what I'm seeing out of the Spartans. They've looked improved, but the next step is putting on the finishing touches and actually winning a football game
3:28
Now, I do want to talk about what's going to be taking place tomorrow in the afternoon
3:33
Tell me why it's a Tuesday afternoon game. I don't know, but Pistons start their regular season
3:38
They started against the Celtics and this is the test of all tests to start off your season In the preseason loved what I saw The offense looked good I liked what I saw out of her basketball team However it preseason Take it with a grain of salt I put a lot more stock in the regular season and the Pistons start off opening the NBA season against a top tier team in the conference
4:03
I've said it several times. The Pistons did not do enough in the offseason to get better in an Eastern conference that did a lot to improve
4:12
The Celtics are probably going to be maybe better. The Philadelphia 76ers, because of what they got from Boston, they're going to be better
4:20
Milwaukee, Indiana getting Tyrese Halliburton, possibly Miami. There are several teams. Cleveland, there are a lot of question marks and a lot of teams you've got to go in expecting to be good
4:32
in this Eastern Conference. I expect the Pistons to be good. I just don't think they're going to be great
4:37
But they can kind of buck my opinion a little bit by starting off their season tomorrow at home court
4:44
at LCA, and beating a very good Celtics team. Start off the year with the win, Pistons
4:50
Start your season off better than the Red Wings. Those are my thoughts
4:54
Want to hear from you. So as always, like, share, and drop those thoughts
4:57
in the comments. And we always encourage you, too, to subscribe to the newsletter
